In 1992 I enrolled on a 10 week evening course at Preston College, learning how to 'create a cake for Christmas'. At that time I couldn’t bake a cake and I had certainly no idea about how to ice them.... it all seemed so daunting! My fears were unfounded... I LOVED it and enrolled again for the Spring Term course - 'Sugarcraft'. My first ever wired sugar flower was a Daffodil. It looked so realistic I could barely believe it... I remember rushing home, waking my husband up and thrusting the flower towards him - ‘look what I've made!’ ... I was clearly hooked. My husband’s job brought us back to our roots in Surrey. At first I missed my classes, but word soon got around that I decorated cakes and my friends were keen to learn more. So I decided to set up a class in my dining room – I had always wanted to teach.
Every Wednesday evening after work I would set up the dining room, cloths on the carpet, tools on the table, cleared the kitchen (cleaned the toilet!) and… at 7.30pm my friends would arrive eager to learn. In our first 6 weeks we covered and decorated our Christmas cakes. It was great fun and they were so pleased with what they had made and were keen to learn more. So, in the spring, they made their first flower – a Daffodil. Classes continued in my dining room for a number of years. I still remember the fantastic feeling watching my first group of new students settle down to practice the skills they'd been taught by me now self employed and it was all mine!
The years have passed and I've lost count of the number of people I have met and taught... I can honestly say that I have enjoyed every minute. As the business has grown, the need arose to take on qualified teaching staff to assist with the running of classes and parties. 'Highly skilled, motivated and dedicated' are the qualities I looked for when considering candidates. Following selection and rigorous training, Inspired Creations now has an excellent team of teachers and support workers. ![]()
